Frogs have bones

Frogs have bones
Originally uploaded by James in Taiwan.

Did you know frogs have bones? I never knew this! I once stepped on a frog, and I remember it going smush, but I don’t remember a smush-crunch.

I always thought frogs had cartalidge like sharks, and I thought amphibians were soft through-and-through. Eating frog’s legs was a learning experience!

Seventh day in Tokyo

Panda Creampuff

My seventh day in Tokyo was quite fun. Steven and I were going to Shibuya to go shopping and do general sight-seeing. We got off the subway one stop early and saw that there were 5 dancing troops (of 30+ people each) outside the subway station.

After watching the dancers, we went around and found a snack shop where they had cream puffs in the shape of panda bears. It was quite nice, and very delicious.

Tokyo Street Fair

Everything was followed up by a street fair that went on. This lasted about 2 hours and each team of performers would have to dance around 2 miles. This was quite impressive since many of them were over 60+ years old.

Fourth day in Tokyo

Pork ramen with gyoza

My fourth day in Tokyo was filled with meetings. I found out by this point that the original customer visits I was going to have were canceled and we had to reschedule them the following week. I told Steven this and he will join me tomorrow and spend the weekend. I only hope that my new hotel will be big enough for the two of us.

One of the great things about being in Japan is the food, and so far I have not had one unpleasant meal. This restaurant was at the basement of our building, witch is nice because it was so hot that day. I had a nice bowl of ramen in a miso broth with three gyoza on the side.

That evening I joined another co-worker from Taipei for dinner. We started out by visiting the “adult” comic book shops that are in Shinjuku. Neither of us have ever been inside one of them, and we wanted to see what they sell.

After the visit to the adult shops we ended up at a yakiniku restaurant. This one was smaller than the one I visited the previous night, but the meats they sold were much higher quality and we had quit a bit of Kobe beef. This so far is one of the best meals I have had since Christmas dinner at Trader Vic’s.

We ended the evening by going to a pachinko gambling place, were both of us lost 1000 yen, however this is only 10 USD, so I was ok.

Third day in Tokyo

Yakiniku

My third day in Tokyo was quite busy, but a little disappointing. I had 2 customer visits scheduled while I was here, and one was canceled, and the other I had only 5 minutes to engage the customer (marketing had 1.5 hours).

This was my primary reason for visiting Tokyo, so because of this I will extend my visit to Japan and stay the weekend.

Tonight I had a chance to have dinner with my PMM, GPMM and PM and someone from sales and another person in marketing. It turns out that the person in marketing is a recent graduated and she has a Cognitive Science background. I told her a little bit about my background and my field and had a wonderful time. The food was great as well, and I even tried some taco (2x). (Not your Taco-Bell style tacos, but the Japanese word for squid.)

Yummy Yakiniku

We goto this Yakiniku / Hot pot restaurant twice a month. It is over by Tai-Da University. It is quite popular and it is usually very crowded.

It is an all you can eat restaurant, but this doesn’t mean that people eat all they can. I would say that their specialty is their chicken, which is marinated in rosemary, lemon, capers and a special pepper combination. It is quite reasonable and I would say it is a nice place to go for a few hours and have a nice meal with friends.

Look at this photo and tell me what looks wrong? Keep looking? Is this a rip-off of Burger King? No, it is Burger King (in Australia).

One of my coworkers is in Australia on a business trip and she took a photo of this and other things Australian. Coincidentally, my sister is down there on vacation too. I hope they both don’t come back with an accent.

Amigo Mexican Resturant

Amigo is one of the better Mexican resturants in Taipei. Although the buritos taste like the tacos that tate like the enchaladas that taste like the chimichangas, it is as close to authentic as I could find.

If you go here, ask for the set, and get the chicken soup, it is really tortilla soup, not chicken soup. Also, I found the beef meals to be tastier than the other meals. Lastly, ask for a very hot plate (tell them that your food was cold last time). Sometimes the plates they use are chilled which is a no-no for hot food.

Last friday night I joined the technical writers in a farewell party for Dave, who is going back to the US office. This was the first time I joined them, but it was a festive occasion and I had a chance to see another side of these mysterious writers living in Taiwan.

Gummi Candies

Jill gave me this gift from her last visit to the US. It is a small box filled with gummy canides. They were all chewy and delicious (they tasted like Gummy Savers).

It was quite nice, but the candy didn’t last too long. Luckily people tend to fill it up for me. :-)
