First night in Kenting: mountain meat

Flying fish
Originally uploaded by James in Taiwan.

The first nioght in Kenting we went arround the main strip, we saw a vendor selling some “mountain meat” and Chinese sausage. They also had smoked flying fish and some baby chickens that you can have heated over the coal bar-b-que. We went for the mountain meat and sausage only, it looked the safest.

After this, we went to a local resturant for dinner and went walking arround a bit more.

Amigo in Taipei

This is an “OK” resturant, but if you photograph the food, the owner (looking at you through a mirror) will come in and ask you why you are taking a photo and ask you if you are copying their food for your resturant.

This place is not Baja Fresh or Chipotle, but it is a bit better than Taco Bell. I suggest you get the chicken quesadilla, it was better than the buritto.

The last thing I would like to mention is that it is a bit less expensive than other Mexican resturants in Taipei.

A unique dining experience

Tonight Steven and I met Ivy for dinner and stumbled upon a must visit restaurant. Take a close look at the decorations, can you tell what type of restaurant it is? Read more to find out!

Mc Cafe

McDonalds is taking over the world. Chipotle mexican resturant is owned by McDonalds, and now McCafe, a competitor to Starbucks.

I saw my first McCafe in New Zealand where it first caught on. Soon we had one or two in Taipei. Now the thing is, their coffe is really great, their hot choclate is devine! I think they have a winner, except the problems is their service is slow and their “baristas” are a little less friendly than Starbucks. There is also the whole issue of this being owned by McDonalds, and if you get over that you will be suprised by a great-tasting coffee drink.

Choclate Sludge

The weird dark thick chocolate drink which James liked alot

Last night Ivy, Steven and I went out to get dinner at a nice Italian resturant. After we went to a “choclate shop” and played Uno and chatted. I got a cup of this choclate sludge. It was the thickness of the Mexican Hot Coco Sue-Anne makes minus the cinimon and a smoother texture. It is almost like a hot liquified Jell-O pudding drink.

One of the most expensive gifts ever. Period.

Gift from People Restaurant

Who ever thought that 5 tea spoons would be the most expensive gift ever? Well I didn’t until I received this gift for bringing a co-worker out to an extravegent lunch at people and they thanked me with this nice set.

The problem is these teaspoons will not fit in my apartment. Why is that? For me to use all five teaspoons, I need to get five teacups and saucers (which I don’t have). I also need to get a teapot to heat the tea in. I then need to get a larger table and three more chairs to fit the people who would drink the tea. Lastly, my apartment is so small, I would need to get a new apartment just to fit these five teaspoons. Thank you People Resturant… You gave me the most expensive gift ever…

I had a very interesting Thanksgiving dinner. After dinner my cousin Johnny wanted to show how to perform some Tai-Kwon-Do moves.

Dinner at Cosi o Cosi

Banyan tree roots

Tonight Steven and I went to an Italian restaurant (Cosi o Cosi) which was very good. There was an eclectic crowd and I wrote down notes about the different patrons

One of the first people I noticed was a short lady sitting at the table across from me. She stuffed her face with so many noodles that they hung out like the roots coming off the branches of a banyan tree. She looked like a fish, with small black eyes and leaned over her plate like a hunchback. When she finished what was on her plate, one of her friends would serve her more pasta and she would smile, with small white pieces of spaghetti sticking out of her braces. Sadly, no amount of dental work would make her more beautiful.

The next set of patrons I saw were sitting next to us having a dinner meeting. It was one man and two girls, and he was obviously hoping one of them (or both) would go home with him. I could tell this by first noticing that they had twice as many empty glasses of alcohol than he did. Furthermore, he kept eying them. I don’t need to speak Chinese to understand that he was hitting on them.

The last set of patrons I saw was a grungy western guy and his well dressed Taiwanese girlfriend. He was wearing gray MC Hammer pants and a Beatles button down shirt. He had a military style vest that hung over the back of his chair while he leaned over and whispered into his girlfriend’s ear as she would smile lovingly. This smile was much nicer than fish lady’s smile, and I am sure he was one happy westerner.

Food rations

Food rations

So all of you have probably heard of the bird flu, but are you preparing? I was listening to KQED’s Forum talk show and they had one of the presidential health advisors on the show to talk about the Bird Flu. He said he has a family of four, and he has rationed over 1 weeks of food.

Think about it, you are hungry, the bird flu is out and humans can pass it along. You need food, but you need to stay indoors for over a week. What will you do? Order pizza (is the pizza man working?) Go to the store (will anyone be there?

You will probably have your utilities, but will you risk your life to go to the grocery store if it means possibly catching the bird flu, where you and your family has a 50-50 chance of living.

OK, the best case that can happen is the flu is not as bad as predicted. All this means is that you have extra food to eat. The worst case is you have nothing and your part of town is quarantined for 3 weeks. Do the math, do the shopping!

Things I bought (so far):

  • dried beans
  • rice
  • chicken broth
  • pasta
  • oatmeal
  • dry milk
  • tea
  • just add water baking mix
  • canned fruit and vegetables
