>>"I understand the need to release this for Windows, but what about all the loyal fans who have been waiting for a re-release. This is really heartbreaking."

You know, loyal fans don't only exist on Macs. I grew up being trained on Apple IIs in school, and those computers gave me many fond memories from their rich library of games. Cosmic Osmo, Odell Lake, Oregon Trail, and even Type To Learn... ohh, I miss them all. :)

I live outside the world of computer wars, and although I find owning a PC better for doing animation, I'd also own a Mac for pleasure if I had the money. I'm glad Hex Isle ended up being released for both systems, although I haven't played it yet. I'm still trying to do the impossible and get a copy of the original game to run on my PC.

Am I dreamer for wishing a world was like the good old days, where third-party video games would be released on both Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis, so all could play them? -sigh-

Hexisle is out, but it is a major disappointment. It's nothing like the original Cosmic Osmo. It lacks the imagination and beauty of the original. Was hoping it would be an actual re-issue of the original game.

For those who have been asking how to run Cosmic Osmo on newer computers, if you have a mac that will boot in OS 9, the CD version and floppy version of CO will work. The CD version plays without any hitches I can detect in OS 9.1. The floppy version has a few problems with sequences that are too fast , but otherwise appears to be OK. I have not been able to run either version in the OS 9 classic emulation on OS X. They start to run, but after a few clicks I get an error message. Also, it's possible to make a disk image of the CO CD in OS 9 (I get an error message when I try to make the image in OS X) and then run CO in OS 9 without the actual CD.

Well the final release is out, and as mentioned it is available for Windows only. I guess this is another good reason to have VMWare Fusion, however I am a bit upset there is no Mac version, the developer mentioned it would be easy to compile this for the Mac.

If you have windows and would like to play this masterpiece, please visit GameTap and play it today! Unfortunately no color support, but the game is still fun anyway!

Well, here is some partially relevant news. Cyan is releasing a 3-D "sequel" to Cosmic Osmo.

http://www.hexisle.com/

However, the circumstances are very different from the 1990 release. This one is a puzzle game, more or less, with our favorite alien working his way through various obstacles. I wish this was the sequel we were all looking for, but it is not.

I think Cyan contracted this project to another company; dig for info on this to find out. The modelling and design, however, are very clean and colorful, so that is an attractive counterpoint to my inner fan, which really misses the simple, surrealistic permanence suspended in monochrome, reminiscent of "La Jette". Yeah, like that's what I thought when I was a snot-nosed kid playing this jewel to the bone.

Do you really think Cyan will close the book on this one?
