I had a chance to see "War of the Worlds" Thursday night. Suprisingly it was harder to get a seat for that then it was to get a seat for Star Wars III on it’s opening night.
So what did I think of it? I actually liked it. It was probably the scariest movie I have seen in some time, thanks to really good sound designers who worked on the movie. This is one of the many movies that emphasise the importance of sound. If you don’t believe me, bring your ipod filled with Madonna’s Greatest Hits and listen to "Like a Virgin" through the entire movie, you might even laugh while people are being turned inter fetalizer in the movie.
I told a co-worker on Friday the other day, and his complaint was that Spielberg went too far and had to end the movie in one of his classic sappy momments. I will give him that, the most improbable things happen at the end of the movie, but the ending itself did not bother me. I decided go go back and re-read the book to see how far off he was from the actual ending. The first thing that I was reminded of was the fact that this is supposed to be an invation of Martians. I immidiately think of Mars Attacks and the goofy aliens in that movie. Additionally the book talks more about the future possibility of attack, which the movie in no way explores, instead Tom Cruise gets home and everything is OK.
Sure this is not the greatest ending, but it was interesting. I thought that the movie Signs had equally cheesy momments and I would like to read an indepth comparison of the two to see how Shyamalan ripped off ideas from H.G. Wells and how Speilberg ripped off ideas from Shyamalan.
